1885 - THE BIRTH OF THE HAMBURGER
In 1885 Frank and Charles Menches were working the Erie County Agricultural fair in Hamburg, New York. According to the Menches family story the brothers ran out of pork for their sausage sandwiches, the brothers turned to beef, added brewed coffee and spices and served it on rye bread with homemade ketchup and onions. When asked what this new sandwich was called, Frank looked up at the banner and called it a hamburg after the town where it was created -Hamburg. The Hamburger was born.
