In 1885, brothers Frank and Charles Menches ran out of pork sausage at the Erie County Fair in Hamburg, New York - so they seasoned ground beef with coffee, brown sugar, and spices, put it between two slices of bread, and accidentally invented the hamburger. More than a century later, their descendants discovered the original recipe tucked away in family papers and did what any self-respecting Menches would do: opened a restaurant. Today, Menches Bros. is still family-owned, still using that recipe, and still giving folks a reason to skip the drive-thru and sit down for something real.
